Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito Counties Fully Utilize Genasys Protect for their County-Wide Emergency Communications Solution
The contiguous counties of Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey will be able to coordinate emergency notifications and evacuation management more efficiently during regional crises. Genasys Protect provides first responders and emergency management officials the combined power of multichannel alerting and evacuation management with more tools to pre-plan, collaborate, model, and execute multichannel public safety notifications.
Atmospheric River flooding hit California with a vengeance in early 2023 with unprecedented rainfall and snow levels impacting areas already recovering from massive wildfires.
Having used the Genasys platform to alert and evacuate residents during wildfires in 2020, Santa Cruz County officials were able to leverage the multi-hazard functionality of the platform, including comprehensive zone-based mapping structure and pre-scripted notification to send out timely alerts.
“Genasys solution allowed us to post a New Year’s flooding message that we really hadn’t expected to be as big as it was, and it allowed us to pre-plan and put out those messages,” said Lt. Nicholas Baldrige, with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department.
To further expand their community-based alerting system, Santa Cruz County, in conjunction with Santa Cruz Regional 911, also launched a branded community-based communication application – CruzAware. County officials stated that CruzAware, which is replacing CodeRed as their preferred communications system, will allow the county to notify residents and businesses of both emergent and non-emergent events.
“We are excited to introduce CruzAware as the next generation of our community alert and warning system,” said David Reid, director of the Santa Cruz County Office of Response, Recovery & Resilience. “With CruzAware, we are not only ensuring the safety and security of our residents during emergencies but also keeping them informed about various non-emergency events that may impact their daily lives.”
Officials say CruzAware represents a significant upgrade compared to CodeRED, the previous communication system.
County officials need a common operating picture to collaborate with each other, their sister agencies, federal emergency systems, related support agencies, and particularly the public. With Genasys, the contiguous counties of Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey will be able to more efficiently coordinate emergency notifications and evacuation management during regional crises.

LRADs UTILIZED IN COLOMBIAN MILITARY'S SEARCH FOR MISSING CHILDREN
During the 40-day search for four missing children, the Colombian military used a taped message from the children's grandmother urging them to stay still in one place and await rescuers. Military helicopters flew over the jungle and broadcast the message in both Spanish and an indigenous language through the LRAD systems: “...I’m your Grandmother Fátima. You need to keep still because the Army is looking for you. If you hear (this), stay still so they can bring you back.”
LARGE OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT VENUE ORDERS GENASYS IMNS
