Saving Lives, Strengthening Communities: Our Mission in Action

The urgent need for Genasys Protect’s capabilities has been on full display this past fiscal quarter including the life-saving differentiation provided by EVAC, as demonstrated during the catastrophic Southern California fires, and the differentiating value of CONNECT – for secure and compliant agency collaboration across the public sector.

The recent disclosures around the pervasive use of Signal by federal officials and the accidental inclusion of a member of the press in highly sensitive conversations, highlights the need for ALL government agencies – federal, local, and state – and law enforcement departments across the nation to adopt Genasys CONNECT  to avoid the pitfalls that come with the common consumer apps, including Signal and WhatsApp.

CONNECT offers the highest levels of collaboration security along with CJIS and FOIA compliant restrictions that keep confidential communications secure, while staying on the right side of laws and regulations.

The Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management (OEM), in collaboration with fire and law enforcement agencies, deployed Genasys Protect to issue critical evacuation alerts. As the fires advanced, geo-targeted notifications helped guide hundreds of thousands of residents to safety across multiple cities. While the structural and financial losses were unprecedented, the number of lives lost remained significantly lower than in past fire events of similar scale—highlighting the vital role of advanced evacuation technology in emergency response.

At Genasys, our mission is to ensure that communities have access to the most effective tools for crisis communication and public safety. The use of Genasys Protect during the LA fires reinforced the importance of multi-channel emergency notifications in fast-moving disasters. In the aftermath of this event, we have seen a surge in interest from agencies and organizations seeking to enhance their emergency preparedness with our software and hardware solutions.

As climate-related disasters become more frequent and severe, the ability to provide clear, reliable, communication to those in harm’s way has never been more critical. We remain committed to advancing our technologies and working closely with emergency managers, first responders, and community leaders to strengthen response efforts.

We continue to hold the people of Los Angeles in our hearts as they embark on the extremely difficult task of rebuilding their communities.

Thank you for your continued trust in Genasys. Together, we can build safer, more resilient communities.

Stay safe,

Richard Danforth

Genasys Protect Deployed Extensively During Southern California Wildfires and Debris Flows

The Genasys Protect platform played a crucial role in the emergency response during the recent wildfires and debris flows in Los Angeles County. Genasys EVAC, ALERT, and our Mobile App provided real-time, location-based notifications to help residents navigate evacuations and stay informed. As fires raged across the region, EVAC coordinated responses and evacuations while ALERT delivered warnings to targeted areas via SMS and the mobile app. Residents were urged to use the app to receive targeted alerts and stay up to date on the wind-fueled fires. Genasys systems helped reduce fatalities and provided faster, more effective evacuation management during one of the worst wildfires in Los Angeles County history.

Voice of the Customer

Los Angeles County

“We have an app in Southern California called Genasys which is incredible because it gives you all the up-to-date current evacuations in our area. It’s an incredible resource. People need to get on the website; it’s free and people can see where their region stands. It’s really important.”

Sheila Kelliher, Captain, Los Angeles County Fire

San Diego OEM

“Access to timely and accurate information is critical during an emergency, especially during evacuations.  Emergency Services and the Unified Disaster Council have invested in technology to bolster the region's preparedness and response capabilities. In 2024, we implemented a new evacuation management software system, Genasys Protect, which allows first responders to manage evacuation zones more effectively and be more surgical when making those tough decisions. The system has helped first responders from the County's unincorporated area and in the City of San Diego safely evacuate more than 15,000 people this month alone.”

Genasys Team Members Spotlight

Joe Grupalo

Joe’s passion for keeping people safe was forged in the 1991 Oakland Hills Firestorm after witnessing firsthand how poor communication led to tragedy. He joined the El Cerrito Fire Department and quickly rose to Battalion Chief. While testing Zonehaven (now EVAC), he saw its potential and joined the company in 2019. In 2021, he became Genasys’ Public Safety Liaison and Senior Training Specialist. Joe now connects first responders, emergency managers, and the public, ensuring EVAC remains an essential tool for disaster response. He believes Genasys' clear communication and coordination can help prevent future disasters like those that occurred in Paradise and Lahaina.

Lisa Bernard

Lisa entered emergency management “completely by accident” after several years volunteering with youth programs. In 2015, she joined the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, eventually handling search and rescue, public information, and emergency alerts. During the 2021 wildfire season, she discovered Zonehaven (now EVAC) and immediately recognized its value in evacuation management. This experience led her to Genasys, where she now serves as Senior Customer Success Manager. Lisa values the direct impact of Genasys tools, knowing firsthand how critical every second is in emergencies. Lisa believes that while software and hardware are important, it’s the dedicated people who roll up their sleeves and ‘get it done’ that make Genasys great.
